Ballroom LATIN AMERICAN SYLLABUS

The professional examinations are in three sections.

1. Demonstration

The demonstration to music is the first requirement and candidates must pass this section in order to continue with the examination. A classical demonstration is expected.

2. Theory

The technique and theory is based on the Reference Books. Questions are confined to the level of the examination and progress from Student Teacher throught to Fellow.

3. Teaching Ability

The candidate’s ability to teach is assessed during the examination.

STUDENT TEACHER SYLLABUS

Practical Demonstration

Candidates must demonstrate with music the required dances dancing as their own gender. The required dances are: Samba; Cha Cha; Rumba; Paso Doble and Jive. The demonstration is restricted to the Student Teacher figures.
Candidates must also dance as the opposite gender, with or without a partner, to music the required dances.

Theory (Oral Examination)

Candidates will be expected to explain the terms and definitions used in the technique charts and must be able to give a simple description of:

1. Basic Movements and actions in each dance.
2. Holds and Body Positions.
3. Time Signature, Tempo and Rhythm of each dance including counting in Beats.

Technical analysis and solo demontration as man or lady is confined to:

1. Simple description.
2. Feet position.
3. Alignment (where applicable).
4. Amount of Turn.
5. Footwork.
6. Timing.
7. One precede and follow is required.

Student Teacher figures  1 1/4 hours

ASSOCIATE SYLLABUS

Practical Demonstration

Candidates must demonstrate with music the required dances dancing as their own gender.
The required dances are: Samba; Cha Cha; Rumba; Paso Doble and Jive. The demonstration is restricted to the Student Teacher and Associate figures.
Candidates must also dance as the opposite gender, with or without a partner, to music the required dances
Candidates must dance solo to music, as man or lady, an amalgamation of two o three of the specified figures of the examiner’s choice in any of the five dances.
To start an imaginary class to music. The dance or dances to be the examiner’s choice.

Theory (Oral Examination)

The examination is based on the technical knowledge of any figure up to and including the specified figures of each dance and including two precedes and follows.

Questions are based on the application of the following principles to the specified fiures in each dance. 1. Time Signature, Accent, Tempo and Rhythm 2. The Counts including counting in Beats and Beats and Bars. 3. Body positions and Holds. 4. Arms. 5. Alignment (where applicable). 6. Amount of turn. 7. Footwork including “transfer and replace”. 8. Cuban Cross. 9. Leads. 10. Description of figures.

Candidates will be expected to answer simple questions on Class Teaching methods in any of the dances.

LICENTIATE (MEMBER) SYLLABUS

Practical Demonstration

Candidates must demonstrate with music the required dances dancing as their own gender.
The required dances are: Samba; Cha Cha; Rumba; Paso Doble and Jive. The demonstration is restricted to the Student Teacher, Associate and Licentiate figures. A higher standard of dancing is exected at this level.
Candidates must also dance as the opposite gender, with or without a partner, to music the required dances.
Candidates must dance solo to music, as man or lady, an amalgamation of two or three of the specified figures of the examiner’s choice in any of the five dances.
To start and imaginary class to music. The dance or dances to be of the examiner’s choice.

FELLOWSHIP SYLLABUS

Practical Demonstration

Candidates must demonstrate with music the required dances dancing as their own gender.
The required dances are: Samba; Cha Cha; Rumba; Paso Doble and Jive. The demonstration must include Fellow level figures. A higher standard of dancing is exected at this level.
Candidates must also dance as the opposite gender, with or without a partner, to music the required dances.
Candidates must dance solo to music, as man or lady, an amalgamation of two or three of the specified figures of the examiner’s choice in any of the five dances.

Theory (Oral Examination)

Questions will be on any of the technical requirements of any figure up to and including the specified figures of each dance and the precedes and follows.
To show practical methods of teaching any dance or specified figure selected from the syllabus by the examiner.
A comprehensive understanding of the technique and application of technique is expected at this level.
